Have you ever heard of Proxy or Firewall? Do you have any idea what are the similarities between them? Or did you ever wonder what the differences are? Surely they are not the same thing as their names already tell but the funny thing is that both of them are similar in terms of security and still there are several differences you should know about.
Well, first let’s start by defining them. A proxy is a program that guards or protects your access from the internet. A firewall instead completely blocks or completely allows requests from the internet. The idea is that both of these may work in harmony by allowing you to secure your internet navigation. How is that possible? Well, the proxy would be filtering access and the firewall will be blocking those accesses according to the classification that the proxy has set up.
Here below you may find some differences between proxy and firewall:
There’s a big difference between the two in this aspect. Mainly the firewall blocks communications or requests that a user makes for a website. But the proxy is different, instead of blocking the request what it does it readdresses the request to another server. If you cannot access a particular website or an excluded website the reason behind this is the proxy, it has this system that will readdress your request to another web page in your existing network.
In these aspects, a firewall both functions as security for your device, or your computer, against internal or external cyber-attacks such as malware or viruses. Here’s how the firewall works, the firewall would be jamming existing ports that viruses can use to enter your device. By also using the firewall you will be able to regulate the accessible ports.
On the other hand, the proxy works by being the guard of your internet. It can control the anomalies that can enter your network through the internet. The network would be accessing the internet but it has to pass through the proxy first, and by this malware, the passage can be limited.
There is a specific function of the firewall for websites. By using the firewall, you can block certain websites but can affect your internet capability. A particular port will be blocked by the firewall for websites to avoid being accessed. But if you completely block the website by a firewall, it affects all the websites available.
A typical website is different from the capabilities of the proxy server. The proxy server would not block websites but will filter them for you. You can classify the websites that you are going to block, let’s say for example you are going to block websites that are strictly for adults only, through the use of the proxy server the identified adult websites are the only ones that, and you can still access the other websites.
Although they have several differences as to nature and the function, both can work together to create a security system that would keep your device or network from vicious anomalies that can be found internally or from the internet. Not only anomalies but also request or accesses from the internet also are filtered or blocked before entering your network. Now you know the difference, enjoy!
